- Academic Support Services
Academic support at Alexander College is delivered through a range of services and initiatives designed to enhance the student learning environment:
- Tutorial Guidance:
Each student is assigned a tutor or mentor who provides tailored academic advice, helps students make informed choices about their academic pathways and future aspirations, discusses career plans, and offers support in overcoming academic challenges. - Professional Services:
Students have access to a variety of professional services, including the Student Affairs Office and Counseling Services, which address personal welfare needs and provide specialist support outside the academic programme. - Academic Advice and Guidance:
Impartial academic advice is available through mentoring, feedback mechanisms, and direct access to module and course leaders. This ensures students receive timely and relevant guidance for academic decision-making. - Learning Skills Development:
The College supports students in maximizing their learning potential through workshops, CV preparation, seminars, Erasmus+ and Mobility Office activities, and external training opportunities, all aimed at developing essential academic and transferable skills. - Career Planning:
The Careers Office provides advice and resources to assist students in planning their professional futures, including CV workshops, interview preparation, and networking opportunities.
All information regarding academic support is clearly outlined in the Student Handbook provided for each programme of study.
- Supervision and Mentoring
At the start of your student journey you will be allocated an academic mentor who serves as your personal tutor. You can consult with your mentor on
- academic performance and progress.
- support on study skills, plagiarism avoidance, use of source materials, and module selection.
- academic queries and concerns.
Students are encouraged to maintain regular communication with their mentors via email and scheduled meetings. If a student fails a module, they are expected to consult with their mentor to discuss feedback and strategies for improvement.
It is important to note that mentors are experts in their academic fields but may not have specialist knowledge of every module. For module-specific issues, students should approach the relevant module leader. For programme-wide concerns, students should contact the programme leader. Both students and mentors share responsibility for maintaining a productive mentoring relationship, which is essential for personal and academic development.
- Monitoring and Feedback
The effectiveness of academic support is regularly evaluated through anonymous student questionnaires administered before the end of each semester. These evaluations invite feedback on all aspects of programme provision, including teaching, administration, and facilities. The feedback is treated confidentially and is used to inform annual module reviews, ongoing programme monitoring, and the College’s four-year Internal Quality Review process.
Alexander College values student input and actively involves students in the process of programme appraisal and continuous improvement.
- Study Skills and Time Management
Alexander College recognizes that students may feel overwhelmed by the volume of material in their courses. To support effective study habits, the College advises students to:
- Adopt an Interpretative Approach:
Rather than attempting to read every text in detail, students are encouraged to scan materials for key themes, prioritize essential readings, and take structured notes that aid understanding and retention. - Plan and Schedule Study Time:
Establishing a regular study timetable is crucial. Short, focused study sessions (at least 30 minutes) are generally more effective than infrequent, extended periods. Students are advised to balance academic work with recreational activities to maintain health and motivation. - Develop Critical Thinking:
Students are encouraged to engage actively with the literature, think independently, and avoid rote memorization. Note-taking should support critical analysis rather than replace it. - Avoid Last-Minute Cramming:
Consistent, planned study is more effective than last-minute efforts, which can lead to stress and reduced performance.
By fostering these habits, students can manage their workload more effectively and enhance their academic outcomes.
- Addressing Personal Problems
Alexander College recognizes that personal difficulties can impact academic performance. Students experiencing personal issues are encouraged to contact their academic mentor, Programme Administrator, or the Student Affairs Office. All discussions are confidential, and the College is committed to providing support and, where necessary, facilitating access to additional resources or services.
