Students from the Fashion and Interior Design Departments of Alexander College participated in an educational workshop on circular design and material innovation at Precious Plastic Cyprus, facilitated by Alexandros Ioannou and Paris Sourouppis. The workshop took place as part of the Creative Studio module, led by Fashion Lecturer Michalis Pantelidis.

Exploring Material Transformation Through Recycling

The first session introduced students to the full process of transforming recycled plastic bottle caps into new design materials. Through sorting, grinding, melting, and moulding, students observed how plastic waste can be reconstituted into durable sheets suitable for creative and functional applications in both fashion and interior design.

Re-thinking Plastic Bags as Design Resources

In the second session, students engaged with the reuse of discarded plastic bags, learning how layered and heat-pressed plastics can be converted into a flexible composite material. This new material was then shaped into small bags and surface-based artworks, demonstrating alternative textile possibilities within a sustainable, circular framework.

Educational Value and Learning Outcomes

The workshop offered significant academic value by:

  • Introducing practical methods of sustainable material development
  • Encouraging critical reflection on waste, consumption, and environmental responsibility
  • Demonstrating innovative applications of recycled plastics within creative disciplines
  • Strengthening students’ understanding of circularity in contemporary design practice

Alexander College extends its appreciation to Alexandros Ioannou, Paris Sourouppis, and the Precious Plastic Cyprus team for providing a highly informative and engaging learning experience, as well as to Michalis Pantelidis for integrating this initiative into the Creative Studio curriculum.
