The Computer Science Research Cluster brings together researchers working in computational science, mathematical modelling, digital technologies, and interactive systems. Its research activities are organised around two distinct and independent themes:
- Quantum Optics, Finite Quantum Systems and Computational Methods
- Gaming Development and Interactive Technologies
1. Quantum Optics, Finite Quantum Systems and Computational Methods
Research within this theme focuses on the mathematical and computational investigation of finite quantum systems, quantum optical models, and the dynamics of quantum states. Particular emphasis is placed on the development of analytic, numerical, and visual methods for studying quantum systems governed by finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, periodic structures, magnetic flux, and time-dependent Hamiltonians.
A central area of research concerns the analytic representation of finite quantum systems. Cluster members will investigate the representation of quantum states through analytic functions, theta functions, coherent-state methods, and related mathematical frameworks. Special attention will be given to the geometric and algebraic properties of these representations and to the ways in which they can provide deeper insight into the structure and evolution of quantum states.
An important research direction will examine the zeros of analytic representations of quantum states. These zeros can encode significant information about the underlying quantum system, including its symmetries, periodicity, temporal evolution, and response to external parameters. Research will explore the trajectories, closed paths, bifurcations, and geometric organisation of zeros under periodic or time-dependent Hamiltonians.
The theme will also investigate finite quantum systems in the presence of magnetic flux. Research in this area will study how magnetic flux affects quantum states, energy spectra, phase-space structures, periodic boundary conditions, and analytic representations. Particular attention will be given to theta-function formulations and to the role of magnetic phases in finite-dimensional quantum mechanics.
Another major research strand concerns the temporal evolution of finite quantum systems. Cluster members will analyse systems governed by periodic Hamiltonians and investigate the evolution of quantum states, operators, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and analytic zeros over time. The research will examine recurrence phenomena, periodic and quasi-periodic behaviour, state transitions, and the geometric patterns generated by quantum dynamics.
Computational mathematics will play a central role within this theme. Research will involve numerical linear algebra, matrix analysis, eigenvalue problems, matrix exponentials, optimisation, symbolic computation, and numerical simulation. These methods will be used to study the evolution of quantum states, the spectral properties of quantum operators, and the stability and accuracy of computational representations.
The cluster will also investigate computational and visual methods for quantum systems. Scientific visualisation will be used to represent quantum states, phase-space distributions, zero trajectories, spectral structures, and time-dependent quantum behaviour. Interactive computational tools may be developed to support both advanced research and the teaching of abstract concepts in quantum mechanics and quantum optics.
A further area of interest concerns the connection between finite quantum systems and quantum information. Research may examine finite-dimensional quantum states, quantum transformations, state reconstruction, coherence, entanglement, and information measures. The aim will be to investigate how mathematical structures arising in finite quantum mechanics can contribute to quantum information science and emerging quantum technologies.
Research outputs may include mathematical models, analytic frameworks, numerical algorithms, simulation software, visualisation tools, and scientific publications. The theme will promote interdisciplinary collaboration among computer science, computational mathematics, numerical analysis, mathematical physics, and quantum science.
2. Gaming Development and Interactive Technologies
Research within this theme focuses on the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of digital games, interactive applications, and immersive virtual environments. Cluster members will investigate both the technical and creative dimensions of gaming development, with particular attention to game programming, game engines, artificial intelligence, computer graphics, virtual and augmented reality, human-computer interaction, and user experience.
A central objective of this research strand will be the development of intelligent, immersive, and adaptive gaming systems. Members will study artificial intelligence techniques for non-player characters, including pathfinding, decision-making, behavioural modelling, strategic planning, and autonomous agent interaction. Research will also examine dynamic difficulty adjustment, automated game balancing, and systems that adapt to the abilities, preferences, and behaviour of individual players.
The cluster will investigate procedural content generation and the automatic creation of game levels, environments, characters, narratives, missions, and digital assets. Machine learning, evolutionary computation, optimisation, reinforcement learning, and generative artificial intelligence may be used to develop content that is diverse, responsive, and personalised.
Another major research area will concern player behaviour modelling and game analytics. Members will analyse gameplay data to study player engagement, progression, decision-making, retention, performance, and interaction patterns. Predictive models may be developed to identify player preferences, detect frustration or disengagement, improve game design, and support personalised gaming experiences.
Computer graphics and real-time rendering will constitute an important component of the research theme. Cluster members will study three-dimensional modelling, animation, lighting, shaders, texture generation, motion capture, physics-based simulation, character development, and the creation of realistic or stylised virtual environments. Research will also address computational efficiency, performance optimisation, and the development of games for different devices and platforms.
The theme will further explore virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed-reality technologies. Research will examine the development of immersive environments for entertainment, education, professional training, tourism, healthcare, cultural heritage, architecture, and scientific simulation. Particular attention will be given to presence, immersion, usability, accessibility, interaction design, motion control, and the evaluation of user experience.
Serious games and game-based learning will represent another significant research direction. Members will investigate how game mechanics and interactive technologies can support education, skills development, behavioural change, decision-making, social awareness, and professional training. Research may involve the design and evaluation of games for mathematics, computer science, healthcare, environmental awareness, cultural education, and workplace simulation.
Human-computer interaction and user experience will be examined throughout the development process. Research will study interface design, interaction methods, cognitive workload, accessibility, inclusivity, player motivation, emotional response, and engagement. User-centred design and empirical evaluation methods will be used to create digital experiences that are effective, enjoyable, and accessible to diverse groups of users.
The cluster will also examine the ethical and social dimensions of gaming technologies. This includes privacy, data collection, online safety, excessive gaming, algorithmic manipulation, monetisation practices, representation, inclusion, accessibility, and responsible game design. Members will explore how gaming systems can be developed in ways that respect users’ rights, wellbeing, and autonomy.
Research activities may involve the use of commercial and open-source game engines, software development frameworks, artificial intelligence libraries, graphics tools, virtual-reality systems, and data analytics platforms. Outputs may include complete games, software prototypes, interactive applications, virtual environments, experimental studies, academic publications, educational resources, and collaborative projects with the gaming and creative industries.
Through this theme, the cluster will contribute to the advancement of gaming development as both a technological and interdisciplinary research field. It will promote collaboration among computer scientists, software developers, game designers, artists, educators, psychologists, data scientists, and industry professionals.
