This is an intensive course which takes students from a lower intermediate level of English to a language level approximately equivalent to IELTS 6 or above, thereby preparing you for entry onto an undergraduate degree in Business, Interior or Graphics programme. You will develop a competence in academic English language as well as study skills such as note taking, report writing, summarising and essay writing, grammar and sentence construction, advanced listening and speaking/oral presentation skills.
At the beginning of semester 2, you will have the option of studying either the Introduction to the Business module or Introduction to Drawing Development & Visual Communication.
The course runs full-time over two semesters with entry points in October, February and June. Students will normally need at least two semesters to make the necessary progress. Some students, however, may complete this course in one semester depending on previous qualifications and their level of English. The modules provide a thorough grounding in the necessary language and study skills for success on your future courses.
This programme is open only to non-native speakers of English. You will need to have a basic (lower intermediate) level of English on commencing the course.
We will sometimes accept applicants on the basis of application forms alone, but if possible we will arrange for you to be interviewed. In addition to face-to-face interviews we may make arrangements to interview you by telephone.
Teaching and Assessment
You will be introduced to a wide range of learning methods, including lectures, essay writing, simulated meetings, language practice, case studies, problem-solving tasks, group and individual presentations. You will be assessed via coursework, group work, presentations and in-class tests. You will also be expected to sit the formal examinations for some modules which usually take place at the end of the semester.
On successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a “Foundation Course Certificate of Attendance” which will allow you to follow a course of your choice here at Alexander College. If you have a ‘non-standard’ English language background, your application will be considered on an individual basis.
