The English Language Foundation programme provides a remarkable opportunity for students to enhance their language proficiency and prepare for a successful entrance to a UK or local bachelor degree, both offered by Alexander College or any other academic institution.

Course Objectives

  • Attain proficiency in all language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Develop academic vocabulary and language necessary for Higher Education studies
  • Enhance communication skills for academic and social interactions.
  • Gain confidence in participating in class discussions and debates and presenting academic topics.
  • Improve critical thinking and analytical skills through reading and writing tasks.

Academic Progression

During the first semester, students familiarize with the academic expectations of the programme, developing at the same time, listening, speaking, writing and reading skills. Grammar is also revised, enhancing the correct use of the language in order to achieve competent and confident communication in an English environment. By the end of the Semester, students will succeed in having a good understanding of cultural and intercultural specificities in different contexts. Differentiated and interactive learning will also help students limit or even eliminate their language weaknesses.

During the second semester, students build on the knowledge they have acquired to expand vocabulary, language and writing skills. Here, in a student centered environment, put into practice what they have learned and have simulation (mock) exams to help them succeed their goals, with the continuous support of their instructors.

Writing essays and detailed reports, outlining and explaining a problem in detail and expressing viewpoints, along with participating in extended conversations and debates, understanding everyday language and fully comprehend articles and complex texts are amongst the aims of the foundation programme of Alexander College.

After completion of  the two-semester preparatory course, students should  take a level B2 examination within the Common European Framework of Reference for  Languages (CEFR), approved by the Council of Ministers of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus.

Teaching and Assessment

The Foundation programme is led by instructors with years of experience in teaching and in preparation for international exams. Using a variety of methods such as interactive participation and lectures, quizzes, role play, debates, digital tools and platforms, audio and video, group and pair work, direct self-study students have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the language and build confidence. Feedback is provided after any form of assessment as well as support through extra material covering all skills. Alexander College is proud to announce collaboration with the British Council to fully support student language needs.

Entry Requirements

Students are required to present a certificate of proficiency in the English Language, equivalent to level B1 according to CEFR, of any examination approved by the Council of Ministers.

The applicant should also be at least seventeen (17) years old and have a High School leaving certificate or Apolytirion or any equivalent certificate before the beginning of the programme.
