Course Objectives

The English Language Foundation Course will enhance your language proficiency and prepare you for a successful entrance to a UK or local bachelor degree both offered by Alexander College or any other academic institution.

The objectives of the course are:

  • Attain proficiency in all language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Develop academic vocabulary and language necessary for Higher Education studies
  • Enhance communication skills for academic and social interactions.
  • Gain confidence in participating in class discussions and debates and presenting academic topics.
  • Improve critical thinking and analytical skills through reading and writing tasks.

Academic Progression

In Semester 1 you will be from the onset supported and familiarized  with what is academically expected by you.  Listening and Speaking Communication as well as Writing including grammar Skills will be developed in order to communicate with more competence in an English-speaking environment. By the end of the Semester you will have a good understanding of cultural and intercultural specificities in different contexts. Differentiated and interactive learning will help you limit or even eliminate your language weaknesses.

In Semester B, we build on the knowledge you have acquired to expand your vocabulary, language and writing skills. Here, in a student centred environment, you practise and simulate your experience to real life conditions to help you succeed to your goals.  Your well qualified and experienced instructors will support you to the end.

You will learn to write an essay and  detailed reports, outline and explain a problem in detail and express viewpoints. You will be able to exchange extended conversations, understand standard spoken language, lectures, articles, videos, reports, and complex  texts, and you will read with a large extent of independence.

After you complete the two-semester preparatory course, you will take a level B2 examination (Common European Framework of Reference for  Languages, CEFR) approved by the Council of Ministers of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus.

Teaching and Assessment

You will be taught by extremely experienced and passionate instructors. You will be informally assessed and we will give you feedback and support through various means including interactive participation and lectures, quizzes, role play, debates,  digital tools and platforms, audio and video, group and pair work, direct self-study. Alexander College is proud to announce a collaboration with IELTS, British Council to fully support student language needs.

Entry Requirements

Students are required to have a Certificate of English Language proficiency at least equivalent to level B1 of any  specific examination and grade approved by the Council of Ministers.

The applicant should also have a High School Leaving Certificate or Apolytirion or any equivalent and be at least  seventeen years of age before the start of the programme.

Instructors

Elena Vlasiou (Lecturer, Course Leader) earned her BA in English Language and Literature in 2002 (University of Cyprus) and her MA in Literacy and Language in Education 2005 (The University of Sheffield) and has been an English teacher since 2000 and worked mainly in the private sector. She has also worked  at private and state schools as substitute teacher to all age groups and levels. During her career, she has been  preparing students for international exams recognized by Ofqual and within the structures and guidelines of CEFR.  Preparation and teaching included all four skills, namely reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Since 2000, she is  an accredited oral examiner for the IGCSE English as a Second Language exam and since 2023 an accredited  interlocutor of LanguageCert for levels A1-C2 according to CEFR. She was also the Head English Teacher at private institutes, co-ordinating the  syllabus of the institute, deciding on the material used and monitoring fellow English teachers.

Koulla Savva (Lecturer) has studied English Literature & Language at the University of Derby in the United Kingdom (2007- 2010). After completing her first degree she continued her studies following an MA programme in TEFL/TESL (2010- 2011) at the University of Birmingham. Furthermore, she is also an English-Speaking Examiner for young learners  and throughout these years she has also attended several seminars and webinars regarding the language, learners,  classroom, examinations such as IGCSE and IELTS and more. As for work experience, she used to work at a private  institute called Eurognosi Larnaka full time (2011-2023) teaching English to young and old learners (YLE, KET, PET, FCE, IGCSE and IELTS). In 2014 she also collaborated with the MKC City College in Larnaca for a few months  where she used to teach English to undergraduate students. Now, she is working at Alexander College teaching  English language to undergraduate students.

Yuliya Loppas (Lecturer) studied English Philology (MA) Zaporozhe State Pedagogical University (Ukraine) English Philology  (BA) Ternopil State Pedagogical University (Ukraine). She teaches English Language since 2007 at colleges and  institutions.
