The LLM degree programme equips you with specialist knowledge in international law and helps you develop core skills necessary to support work in multiple fields of international law and take on career roles that can have global impact. This degree is unique as it merges traditional scholarly learning that focuses on developing excellent subject knowledge, with strong practice led skills to help your career development.

Our teaching and learning approach uses a combination of learning methods including formal lectures, guest lectures, workshops that simulate court hearings, arbitral proceedings and negotiations for which you will play a key role to develop your academic knowledge and skills pertinent to law.

Throughout the curriculum, you will be asked to prepare written proceedings and reports in addition to traditional essays. In this way you will build your confidence and develop key transferable skills such as communication skills, team work, leadership and time management.

The LLM prepares you with the knowledge necessary to take on roles in the competitive international law field either as a practitioner, civil servant in Foreign Affairs and International law departments, NGO’s or international organisations.

Throughout the course you will learn in workshops and small group seminars, in which discussion and debate with students and lecturers are key to your learning. You will have 66 contact hours of teaching per module, based on 6 hours of contact time a week for 11 weeks. These sessions may be held by your lecturer, a guest lecturer / industry expert, or an academic tutor.

You will be expected to do independent study as well where we will direct you to particular reading materials and points of consideration as well as exercises to help you reinforce your learning and skills building. We often discuss the materials from this part of your learning in lectures, seminars and workshops. Your independent work here helps you develop what you have learnt in your teaching and reinforce and apply learning to a range of exercises that helps you build on knowledge throughout your programme.

For the Dissertation you will undertake independent research. You will work under the supervision of a member of the course team and will meet with your supervisor regularly.

The course provides you with opportunities to test your understanding of the subject informally before you complete the formal assessments that count towards your final mark. Each module normally contains at least one piece of practice or ‘formative’ assessment for which you receive feedback from your tutor. Practice assessments are developmental and any grades you receive for them do not count towards your module mark.

There is a formal or ‘summative’ assessment at the end of each module. Assessment methods include written examinations and a range of coursework assessments such as essays, reports, portfolios, performance, presentations and your final year major project. The grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark.

A 2:2 or above in a relevant degree.

If English is not your first language you require an IELTS overall score of 6.0 with no element below 5.5.

Applicants without a degree in a relevant field, will also be considered on a discretionary basis, taking into consideration any relevant work experience.

For the LLM International Law, you will be required to complete all modules in the three trimesters in order to earn a total of 180 UK credits (90 ECTS).

This course will equip you with the necessary International Business Law knowledge and legal expertise and skills for international practice and academic research at the highest level, as well as for a wide range of other intellectually demanding roles such as; senior researchers or policy advisors for NGO’s, government agencies or private practitioners, commercial law practice, commercial business practice, NGO advisors, civil servants in the financial ministries and academics.
