The research study “From Exposure to Competence: Embedding Sustainability in Interior Design Education”, authored by Stelios Stefanos Drousiotis, Dora Anastasiou, Stefanos Christodoulides and Giorgos Nicou of Alexander College, Cyprus, is currently available as a preprint through Research Square and is under major peer review for publication in Discover Education, part of Springer Nature. The multidisciplinary study brings together researchers from Interior Design and Computer Science and examines how sustainability is understood, experienced and integrated within Interior Design education.
Using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach, combining a student questionnaire and focus-group research across Years 1–4, the study identifies strong student interest and commitment towards sustainable practice while highlighting uneven sustainability knowledge, confidence and curriculum integration. The research argues for a transition from fragmented sustainability exposure towards a more systematic and scaffolded development of sustainability as a core design competence, contributing to curriculum development, design pedagogy and the future preparation of Interior Design graduates.
