Course Insight
The LLM introduces you to the alternatives to the judicial process, such as mediation and arbitration, upon which key actors in this field increasingly rely. It allows you to develop the theoretical knowledge of these processes as well as knowledge of the procedural application of these processes in the field of international business and law.
It further engages you in complex moots and oral presentations, so that upon completion of the course you can argue points of law in a convincing and accurate manner. You will experience a variety of learning methods so that you build strong knowledge supported by key skills most desired by employers in the field of International law and business.
Teaching
You will be taught through a blended learning strategy whereby you will study through a combination of lectures, seminars and in-class activities that require you to undertake preparation in advance of the class. Some of the materials you must access through online networks on our virtual learning platforms.
You will typically have around 9 contact hours per week.
Seminars in smaller groups will enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures. You will have access to library facilities throughout your course as well as online materials.
Independent Learning
When not attending lectures, seminars, workshops or other timetabled sessions you will continue learning through self-study. Typically, this involves reading journal articles and books, undertaking research in the library, using the virtual learning environment, working on preparing for coursework assignments / examinations, workshops and seminars. Your module tutor will direct you towards specific readings and/or activities to complete before class.
For the Dissertation you will undertake independent research. You will work under the supervision of a member of the course team and will meet with your supervisor regularly.
Assessment
The course provides you with opportunities to test your understanding of the subject informally before you complete the formal assessments that count towards your final mark. Each module normally contains at least one piece of practice or ‘formative’ assessment for which you receive feedback from your tutor. Practice assessments are developmental and any grades you receive for them do not count towards your module mark.
There is a formal or ‘summative’ assessment at the end of each module. Assessment methods include written examinations and a range of coursework assessments such as essays, reports, portfolios, performance, presentations and your final year major project. The grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark.
