As part of the Sustainability in the Design Disciplines module, fourth-year Design students, accompanied by their lecturer Dr. Stelios Stefanos Drousiotis , visited Mackenzie Beach in Larnaca to explore the proposal of transforming it into a non-smoking beach.

The purpose of the field visit was to document existing environmental conditions – particularly the presence of cigarette waste, and to gather public perspectives on this sustainability initiative.

During the visit, students actively engaged with local residents and international visitors through on-site questionnaires and informal discussions, collecting valuable insights into community attitudes toward beach cleanliness, environmental responsibility, and sustainable public spaces.

This hands-on experience forms an integral part of the project’s research phase, enabling students to develop informed and impactful design solutions grounded in real-world data and community participation.
