Three of the most common questions I am asked as a lecturer and as a designer, is; is there a future in the fashion industry? Is it sustainable? Will I find a job?’ Well, to answer these questions we need to understand fashion and its role within the industry.

What is fashion?

Fashion is a language that tells a story about the person who wears it, fashion is revealing and clothes reveal what groups people are associated with. Fashion is something we deal with every day, even the people that don’t care, what you choose to wear every morning says a lot about you and how you feel that day. Fashion and clothes also separate people into groups, for example, Judges wear robes, brides wear wedding dresses and orthodox Jewish men wear long black suits, athletes wear sportswear and many more. So unless a law is issued which prohibits clothes, we all need clothes every day.

Why is fashion sustainable?

Fashion is a big business; more people are involved in buying, selling and the production of clothing, than any other business in the world. Every day, millions of workers design, sew, dye, style and transport clothing to stores. With the aid of ads on buses, billboards and magazines, constantly reporting what musicians, actors, political figures and royalty are wearing, we are given solutions on what to wear, either consciously, or subconsciously.

Will I find a job?

No job will knock on your door! You go out and find it! And yes you will find a job, as fashion is such a diverse profession, the possibilities are vast. Studying Fashion will open the paths to professions such as Fashion designing, fashion technician, textile designer, fashion merchandise, manufacturing, wholesale, retailing, stylists (magazines, TV, photoshoots), fashion editor, fashion communication, fashion blogging and many more.
